Remco Evenepoel has written himself another golden chapter in cycling’s history books – and this one might just shine the brightest. On the streets of Kigali, over 40.6 kilometers of pure punishment, the Belgian bullet stormed to his third consecutive Worlds ITT medal – and this time with a ride that will be remembered as one of the most dominant ever.
“It’s a fantastic day and it makes me incredibly proud of what I achieved here! I felt pretty good straight away. On the first flat part, I felt that the legs were turning and was holding my pace without going over the limit. And then, the first climb of the day was actually quite hard, together with the last two ones, so I really pushed there. When I saw I had quite a big gap, I just said to myself that I had to keep the pace high the entire time. In the final part, I hated the cobbles, because it was so hard to really push through them, but in the end, I won, and this is the most important thing.” – Remco Evenepoel
Isaac de Toro was fast enough for 5th – signalling a bright future.
Thymen Arensmen of the Netherlands looked stylish in national colors, and ended up 9th.
The course was no ordinary chrono test – four climbs, over 800 meters of vertical gain, and even a nasty cobbled ascent thrown in for good measure. But for Remco, it was all just another stage for the show. Rolling down the start ramp last, the Olympic Champion blitzed every time check, smashed every split, and left no doubt. He stopped the clock at 49:46 – nearly 49 km/h average on that brutal profile – to claim gold in Africa.
The highlight reel moment? On the fearsome Kimihurura climb, Evenepoel reeled in none other than Tadej Pogačar – who had started two and a half minutes earlier. The sight of Remco flying past Pogacar while locked in full chrono-tuck might go down as the defining image of Kigali 2025. A nod, a celebration in the final meters, and then arms aloft: another Worlds, another masterpiece.
Jay Vine rode his excellent end of season form to a Silver medal.
And as if Belgian cycling needed more reason to celebrate, Soudal Quick-Step doubled up on the podium with Ilan Van Wilder storming to bronze – his first ever medal on the world stage. A 1–3 finish for the Wolfpack, and a day of pure dominance draped in black, yellow, and red. Post race, Ilan talked about his total surprise at earning a podium spot, with no altitude training or special prep for the race.

So it’s gold for Remco, bronze for Ilan, and another seismic shift in the chronicles of cycling. Kigali’s hills belonged to Belgium today – and to a 25-year-old who keeps proving, year after year, that we’re witnessing one of the greatest time trialists the sport has ever known.
