The sporting world has a huge summer ahead of it. In football, the revamped FIFA Club World Cup will take centre stage. At the same time, in the fight game, a plethora of huge showdowns featuring the likes of Sean O’Malley, Ilia Topuria, and Khamzat Chimaev will all be settled in the Octagon. But the most storied event of every year is the Tour de France, and this summer is no different.
On July 5th, 184 of the planet’s finest riders representing 23 different teams will embark on Lille for the opening stage of Le Tour. From there, the two-wheeled sensations will travel across 2,060 gruelling miles before charging down the Champs-Élysées on July 27th. But which of them are the favourites to claim the coveted yellow jacket and etch their name into the history books?
Let’s find out.
Tadej Pogacar
Slovenian sensation Tadej Pogačar heads to France as the reigning champion, and online gambling outlets make him the frontrunner to successfully defend the crown. The popular Bovada online gambling site currently makes the Slovenian maestro a short-priced -275 betting favourite to leave L’hexagone with the yellow jersey this summer, and after his exploits last year, it’s clear to see why.
The Klanec-born star shot to prominence in 2020 and 2021 by claiming back-to-back Tour de France victories, with the first of those coming at just 21 years of age. In 2022 and 2023, he was unceremoniously usurped, triggering a rivalry unlike anything cycling has seen in years, and it looked as though his time in the sun might well be over. However, last year, he bounced back in stunning fashion, claiming his third yellow jacket en route to completing cycling’s triple crown with further victories in the Giro d’Italia and UCI Road World Championships.
Now, he hopes to join the all-time greats by claiming four Le Tour titles, and onlookers consider him well-poised to do exactly that. In 2025, Pogacar has already claimed victory in the Tour of Flanders, La Doyenne, Strade Bianche, and La Flèche Wallonne. Capping his stellar year off with yet another yellow jacket would crown one of the finest campaigns in cycling history.
Jonas Vingegaard
While Pogacar may well be the odds-on favourite this summer, don’t be fooled into thinking that his potential victory is anywhere close to guaranteed. If the Slovenian is to emerge with the crown again, then he will have to beat Jonas Vingegaard, something that is no easy feat.
The Danish star picked up back-to-back Le Tour victories in 2022 and 2023, knocking Pogacar off his perch and inheriting the cycling throne. Last year, he was the favourite to make it a trifecta of titles before his greatest rival bounced back to claim the yellow jacket by just over six minutes. However, one could say there is an asterisk over the Slovenian’s victory, considering the fact that the reigning champion was nursing an injury picked up in a crash earlier in the campaign.
If Vingegaard can return to the kind of form that saw him claim his maiden title in a record-breaking 79h 32′ 29″ back in 2022, there will be no stopping him. The bookies certainly think the two-time champion is in with a shot. He is currently priced as the narrow +250 second favourite, and considering that was the price that Pogacar won at last year, the Dane cannot be ruled out.
He, too, has picked up huge victories already this year, including triumphing at Volta ao Algarve. Had it not been for another crash, he would have won the Paris–Nice as well. Write him off at your peril.
Remco Evenepoel
At just 25 years old, Remco Evenepoel is widely regarded as the future of cycling. The Belgian prodigy has made waves in recent years, showcasing his immense talent with his breakout win at the 2022 Vuelta a España. Since then, he has picked up more wins on the one-day classics circuit, including a dominant performance at the 2024 Liège–Bastogne–Liège. However, he very much remains a distant third favourite.
Evenepoel is currently priced at +700 to claim his first-ever Yellow Jersey and become Belgium’s first winner since Lucien Van Impe almost half a century ago. And while those odds are some way behind the two frontrunners, the 25-year-old himself is well clear of the rest of the field, with Slovenia’s Primoz Roglic the next in the list at +2200.
The Belgian superstar has certainly become a household name in recent times. He claimed two Olympic gold medals in Paris last summer as he romped to glory in both the road race and the time trial. Now, he is looking to return to France and cement his legacy by providing that the future is now. He remains somewhat untested on Le Tour, but he did claim the white jersey last year, awarded to the best young rider in the race.
