TOUR’25 Stage 10: Bastille Stage for Yates – Healy in Yellow

Tour 2025

2025 Tour de France Stage 10 Report: Stage 10 of 2025 Tour de France on French National Day was dominated by a large break through the Massif Central. After a thrilling finish, Simon Yates (Visma | Lease a Bike) was first across the finish line on Mont-Dore. Thymen Arensman (INEOS Grenadiers) was second and Ben Healy (EF Education-EasyPost) was third. Healy had one of his best days and took the yellow jersey from Tadej Pogačar (UAE Emirates XRG).

The final kilometre of stage 10

Race director, Christian Prudhomme: “A mountain stage on Bastille Day, and one that’s likely to create some fireworks as there are seven second-category hills or passes on the menu. Anyone who missed the 2023 Tour will be able to catch a glimpse of the climb to the Puy de Dôme, as the riders will tackle the first few kilometres of it early in the stage. After that, there’ll be no respite until the final climb to the resort of Le Mont-Dore. The 3.5km climb averaging 8% will bring the total vertical gain for the day to 4,400 metres!”

Stage 10 of the 2025 Tour de France delivered the fireworks everyone was waiting for on the 14th of July. The roads of Massif Central witnessed a flurry of attacks all day long, until Simon Yates (Visma | Lease a Bike) dropped his break companions on the final climb to Le Mont-Dore, claiming his third Tour stage win, six years after the previous two. Also part of the escape, Ben Healy (EF Education-EasyPost) gave it his all to chase the Maillot Jaune. Third on the day (at 31 seconds), he becomes the fourth Irish overall leader of the race, the first since Stephen Roche’s mythical year 1987! After Visma | Lease a Bike tried to put him under pressure, Tadej Pogačar (UAE Emirates-XRG) attacked on the final climb, but Jonas Vingegaard matched his pace. The Slovenian is now 29 seconds behind Healy on GC.

On France’s big day it might turn in to a day for the GC men

Monday was Bastille Day and the riders promised fireworks on an explosive course. The first categorised ascent of the day featured early in the stage. From that point, there will be little to no flat roads all the way to Le Mont-Dore. Georg Zimmermann and Marijn van den Berg are forced to abandon, 173 riders took on a 165.3 kilometre route, featuring eight categorised climbs and a total elevation of 4,450m.

Lenny Martinez and Julian Alaphilippe both wanted to be in the break, Martinez made it, Alaphilippe didn’t

A French-studded 29-man break
As soon as the flag dropped, Victor Campenaerts (Visma | Lease a Bike) attacked. The battle for the break was on and it took 17 kilometres, including the ascent of Côte de Loubeyrat (summit at 11.8km), for a 28-man group to get away with big names such as Ben Healy (EF Education-EasyPost) and Simon Yates (Visma | Lease a Bike), as well as a strong contingent of French attackers: Valentin Paret-Peintre (Soudal Quick-Step), Alex Baudin (EF Education-EasyPost), Lenny Martinez (Bahrain Victorious), Quentin Pacher (Groupama-FDJ), Julian Alaphilippe (Tudor), Bruno Armirail (Groupama-FDJ), Aurélien Paret-Peintre (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) and Clément Champoussin (XDS Astana). Pablo Castrillo (Movistar) made it 29 attackers at 31km. UAE Emirates-XRG drove the bunch with Tim Wellens and Nils Politt and the gap gradually increased over the following climbs, until Healy (trailing by 3:55 on GC) took the lead of the virtual overall.

Another hot day in the saddle

Martinez chases the polka dots
On the road, 45 years after his grandfather Mariano Martinez won on Bastille Day in Morzine, Lenny Martinez took the KOM points at the summit of the Côte de La Baraque (54.5km), Côte de Charade (66.6km) and Côte de Berzet (78.4km). With this succession of climbs, the break explodes. There were 15 riders at the front over the Col de Guéry (115.4km), where Martinez all but secured the polka-dot jersey at the end of the stage. At the summit, the peloton trail by 5 minutes.

Visma | Lease a Bike up the ante
The break riders unleash a flurry of attacks. The gap hits a maximum of 5:55 at the Col de la Croix-Morand (124.1km). Six riders remain at the front into the last 20 kilometres: Healy and Yates are still there, with Quinn Simmons (Lidl-Trek), Michael Storer (Tudor), Ben O’Connor (Jayco AlUla) and Thymen Arensman (INEOS Grenadiers). Behind them, Visma | Lease a Bike attacked with Sepp Kuss and Matteo Jorgenson, but UAE Emirates-XRG control. Healy set the pace at the front as he chases the Maillot Jaune. Simmons was dropped on the ascent of the Col de la Croix-Saint-Robert, with 14km to go. On the same climb, Visma | Lease a Bike up the ante again. Over the top, Pogačar has lost all his teammates.

Stage win for Simon Yates

Yates and Healy light up the last fireworks
Yates attacked just ahead of the final climb: 3.3km at 8% on Le Mont-Dore. Arensman only trails by 5 seconds into the last kilometre but he can’t bridge the gap as the British winner of the Giro flies away to his third Tour stage win, six years after the previous two. Healy finished third with a gap of 31 seconds.

Ben Healy had to wait to see if he would be in yellow

Tadej Pogačar puts the hammer down with 1.5km to go. Jonas Vingegaard matches his acceleration and the duo slow. They cross the line with a gap of 4:51. Healy took the Maillot Jaune by 29 seconds. He is the fourth Irish rider to lead the overall standings of the Tour de France after Seamus Elliott, Sean Kelly and Stephen Roche.

Tour 2025
Pogačar and Vingegaard seem happy with their day

Stage winner, Simon Yates (Visma | Lease a Bike): “It’s been a long time since I last won in the Tour! I’m glad to be back here. It’s a great year for me after the Giro victory. I also was not really expecting opportunities here. I’m focused on Jonas [Vingegaard] for the GC. Even today, we wanted to be up there to try things and race aggressively. The morale is good. We took a small hit, let’s say, after the TT, but that’s how it goes in cycling. You take it on the chin and move forward. Today, it played out in a way that I could be there for the stage and I took it with both hands. My initial feeling was relief because I was really running out of legs and thought I would get caught on the line. I didn’t feel like it up there. It was a really hard start to make the break, there was a lot of strong guys. That’s why I took an advantage in the final corners before the climb started. I was looking for a bit of a head start. With EF Education-EasyPost riding for the Yellow Jersey, we had almost a free ride to the final climb and then I just tried to do my best. Victor Campenaerts has been super strong, not only today but since the start of the Tour, putting in a lot of work and he was essential also in the finale. The whole team is being really strong.”

Tour 2025
Ben Healy in yellow

Overall leader and 3rd on the stage, Ben Healy (EF Education-EasyPost): “This is just a fairytale, a dream come true. Had you told me before the Tour de France that I was going to be here, in the Yellow Jersey after winning a stage earlier on, I wouldn’t have believed it. It wasn’t exactly the plan. We were surprised that UAE Team Emirates let such a big break up the road, and we took advantage of it by putting four riders in there. I have to say a big thank you to my teammates Neilson Powless, Alex Baudin and Harry Sweeny because, without them, getting the Yellow Jersey would have been impossible. At some point, the stage became a fight against myself. I know I was taking some risks by digging so deep for so long but how often does an opportunity like this come around? It was pretty nerve-wrecking to wait for four minutes in order to find out whether I was in yellow or not. Had Tadej [Pogacar] raced all the way to the top of the final climb, I might have a different jersey now. I’m super proud to represent Ireland. This success is still sinking in, and I’m pretty emotional. From now on, I will turn my focus towards the GC in order to respect the Yellow Jersey and try to keep it for as long as possible.”
