Gobik for the Fall: Vanquish Jersey, Matt Bib, Icon Socks & Base Layer Review

Gobik 2025

Gobik Autumn Collection Review: You know summer must be over when bike clothing companies start to promote their winter collections, but where PEZ-man Alastair Hamilton is on the east coast of Spain, he still has days in the upper 20 degree centigrade. Gobik have the autumn/fall – not cold, but not too hot weather covered with their Vanquish unisex long sleeve jersey, Matt bib-shorts, Icon socks and second skin base layer.

Gobik kit for the autumn

Gobik Long Sleeve Jersey Unisex Vanquish
The unisex Vanquish jersey does have long sleeves, but it is not a heavy winter jersey, it’s more like a race jersey… with long sleeves. The material is lightweight and breathable, just right for autumn conditions combined with a base layer for the cool early start or for the shady side of the road.

Subtle logos

Starting from the top: The Vanquish Jersey has a small collar, so the neck isn’t fully exposed, those scooped necklines are okay on a race jersey, but to for training. The label on the inside just bellow the collar doubles as a rider name tag and a handy hanger. The full length zip has a chunky rubber gripper for easy up and down and the zipper teeth are behind flaps. The breathable material feels the same for the sleeves as the body of the jersey and is very stretchy to fit well and hold its shape. The shoulders are well shaped and the double sleeve cuff is elasticated to stay in place on the wrist, but is not so tight that you can’t pull it up to just bellow the elbow, if you are feeling too hot.

Not over the top

There are three very well stitched pockets at the rear with extra material at the openings and double stitching at the edge of each pocket. But, there is no small zip pocket for cash or cards, which is a must for all training jerseys. The elastic waist hem is rubberised to hold the jersey down and is wide so there is no cutting in. There is a small Gobik chest logo, another on the middle rear pocket and on the back of the right shoulder, with ‘Gobik Draw new paths, chase your own story.’ printed low down on the front. All very subtle. As with all Gobik clothing it is well made, has strong stitching doubled up where needed and is shaped to fit. I have the Whisper design, it is also available in Flamingo.

Very good colour combination

Gobik Matt 2.0 Aura Bib Shorts

Gobik 2025
Coffee colour?

The Matt bib-shorts have a similar cut to the Lancer bibs I reviewed in the spring, with some small differences. The big difference is the materials used. The spine area is smaller but the material is double and the section bellow is thicker, to keep your back warmer, I would guess?

Gobik 2025
Very well put together

The rest of the lycra feels heavier, Gobik say this is because there is more compression. The bibs feel just as flexible as any other and you do notice the extra support. The straps are wide, strong and comfortable – No cutting in and secure. The front is low enough for a call of nature and the side panels seem a little lower than the Lancer, but it runs all the way round the waist and gives a bit more support for us who are no longer ‘racing snakes’.

Gobik 2025
Wide straps

The panelling gives a sleek fit and the seam stitching is very strong and is overlocked on the front and back of the legs. The thigh panels have been lazer cut for a neat finish and the rubberised grippers don’t constrict or irritate the skin and hold everything in place. There is a small logo on the left buttock, ‘Gobik’ in vinyl and small logos on both legs, again not ‘in your face’.

Gobik 2025
One of the best pads

Now the most important part of all bibs: The pad or chamois. I think it is the same as the one in the Lancer bibs, which is made up of two separate thick pads that give a very comfortable ride. I use a 3-D saddles on my Zwifting bike, you can feel the pattern with a thinner pad, no problem with the Gobik pad. At the moment I have a smooth Flight saddle on my road bike and at first I thought it would feel too thick, but when you sit on it, it compresses like a body-form bed mattress. The material of the pad that goes next to your skin is soft and doesn’t move around. It’s not as thick in the mid area and round the edges, the front area is thinner and has breathing holes to keep everything ‘fresh’. The Matt bib-shorts are available in six different colours in standard leg length and two colours in the 3cm shorter leg version. I had the Aura which went well with the Whisper jersey.

Classy style

Gobik Unisex Icon – Salt Socks

Gobik 2025
Best of all, they are white

The previous Gobik socks I reviewed were the Vortex aero socks, the Icon sock are more traditional, but are just as comfortable and are perfect for your ‘normal’ daily use. The leg part is comfortably tight with a double cuff to keep everything in place. There is a Gobik logo on the cuff, with a small reflective square on the back. The heel and toe areas are shaped for a nice fit and made of a thinner material and the top of the foot is made of a breathable material with a thicker section for added comfort on the ball of your foot. The material for the sole of the sock is the same as the leg, so nice and comfortable without rucking up inside the shoe. They are also marked ‘left’ and ‘right’ to avoid and confusion.

White and a good length

Men Base Layer Second Skin – Salt

Gobik 2025
Keeps you cool or warm

Base layers have got thinner and tighter over the years, but they work so much better that the vests us ‘old guys’ had in the past. The Gobik second skin base layer is made from breathable material which keeps you cool and takes the sweat away from the skin. As it is another layer, it does also add warmth, if you need it.

Gobik 2025

The base layer is body hugging and fits nicely under any jersey without rucking up. The tail at the back is longer to tuck in and look after the lower back. All the stitching is perfect and strong and well made. Nice to wear in all weather conditions.

Gobik 2025

*** So how does the full Gobik kit feel: Starting with the Matt bibs, as I said with the Lancer bibs: ‘My first impression was of comfort and a very good fit’ and I would say the same about the Matt bib-shorts, which is not a surprise as the pad/chamois is the same. The cut of the bibs is different, but equally comfortable. The fit is good and the leg length is correct. The bib part is also just right with wide straps that don’t cut in and hold them up. Very good shorts. The jersey fits well, but it feels strange to have long sleeves on a thin jersey. Normally I would be a wearing a heavier material long-sleeve jersey or arm-warmers, but on a day you are not sure of the weather, it’s a nice feeling. The socks are not aero, but very nice to wear, again they fit well. The base layer does what it is meant to do in hot and cold conditions.

The day I first tested the Gobik kit, it was 17ºC when I went out and the temperature went up to 25ºC. Not hot, but also not cold. Actually for me it was just right for a bike ride. It felt a bit cool in the shade, but apart from that all the kit performed well, perfect for this time of year. It looks great too, even if the model is not quite in his top condition.
