Santini ‘Ready to Ride’ Bib Shorts, Unisex Jersey and Puro Q-Skin Socks
I like Santini clothing, this goes back to when I started ‘proper’ cycling and there wasn’t much choice in kit and Italian bike clothing was so rare and special and usually expensive. Santini has that Italian style and cut was only a dream. These days Santini still has the style, but is easily available and isn’t one of the more expensive ranges of cycling clothes. Santini sent me their ‘Ready to Ride’ bib shorts, unisex short sleeve jersey and Puro socks to try out before the summer.

Alastair Hamilton – PEZ sez:
Santini ‘Ready to Ride’ – Bib Shorts
Green! Maybe not my favourite colour for bib shorts, but they do go with the ‘Rust’ coloured jersey. Also these are not my only pair of green Santini shorts, as I have a pair of Katusha team bibs that were meant to match the Tour de France points jersey, but they were never needed. So maybe green isn’t so bad.

Santini 2025
I do own another pair of green Santini bib shorts

OK, so that’s the colour, what about the build? As with all Santini kit, the workmanship is perfect. The stitching is strong and neatly done, with double, triple and overlock where it’s needed. The edges of the bib is seamed and the legs, the wide gripper looks to have been laser cut. The gripper is rubberised to hold everything in place, without any chafing.

Santini 2025
Mesh bib

The bib is made of a mesh material, which will be great in the hot weather, when it comes. There is a single piece of material that comes up high at the back and the straps are wide and strong. The legs of the shorts are made up of two panels, and body has six panels, this gives a very comfortable tailored fit to body and legs. the leg length I would say is long, which is the style at the moment, but you can have them where you want. There are two small reflective strips, one at the back of each leg, so these bibs are made for those ride on the left and the right side of the road, unlike many short that only have the reflector on the left leg. The logos are subtle: one on the left ‘cheek’ and another in the left bib strap, plus a tiny little Italian flag on the back where the bib meets the shorts.

Santini 2025
Reflectors on both legs

The pad or ‘chamois’, the most important part of all bib shorts. Santini use a GITevo pad which has a soft to the touch material next to your skin with various thicknesses of gel. I could feel three different thickness, more where you need it and less where you don’t. The gel seems to be part of the pad, some I have tried recently, the gel moves about a bit, but not with this pad, everything stays where it should.

Santini 2025
One of the best pads

So how do they feel? Very nice (maybe I’m biased). The green colour is subtle, but there are six different colour choices. As I said, the fit is perfect and the stretchy material will fit anyone. There is a slightly compression feel to the bibs, which also helps the feel of comfort. I’ve not had time for a long ride yet, but they passed the Zwift test on the home trainer and a ride of just over an hour was easy, for me and the bibs.

Santini 2025
‘Ready to Ride’ the kit yes – The rider….

Santini ‘Ready to Ride’ – Jersey Unisex
The colour is ‘Rust’, but looks more like a pastel orange, there are eight colours to choose from. None of the colours are ‘in your face’ all quite subdued, it is the style these days. As with the bibs, the stitching is strong and perfectly done. There is a collar at the back that comes down to the front at the zip. The sleeves are long and raw cut, so you can wear them as long or as short are you want. A full zip with flap on the inside at the top.

Santini 2025
Well made and with style

The body is made up four panels with sliming side panels, which gives a very nice fit. Santini say the jerseys are ‘Unisex’ and yes, they do fit many body shapes. The material feels soft to the skin and you wouldn’t need a base layer in the warmer weather. Three rear pockets, but no small zipped pocket, which I think all training jerseys should have. The stitching around the pockets is very strong and tops of the pockets have a very substantial hem, you won’t miss the pocket opening. The waist is elasticated with a gripper strip at the back so no slipping down. Two little logos: One on the middle rear pocket and another lowdown on the front and, like the bibs, there is a small Italian flag on the back of the collar. Also like the shorts there are two reflective strips on the back… global road safely.

Santini 2025
No little zip pocket

How does it feel? Soft and comfortable would sum it up. The material allows full movement with not constriction. The pockets are roomy and don’t stretch too much and the colour is easy on the eye. A very good jersey at a reasonable price. Your only problem might be if you have a cycling partner (wife, husband, boyfriend, girlfriend etc.), there might be a ‘domestic’ over who gets to wear the jersey.

Santini 2025
Very strong stitching on the pockets

Santini Puro – Socks
Santini had the good sense to send me white socks, although I can’t find them on the Santini website, there are eight different sock colours. The socks are high, as the latest style demands, but maybe too high for an ‘old school’ type like me. If you like that look, then great, but we are all not like Chuck. Anyway, they are comfortable, no rubbing and there is extra material where it is needed and thinner, breathable material on the leg part. There is no gripper at the cuff, but the socks stayed in place. There is ‘Santini’ down the back of the socks, which you can hardy see on the white socks, but is more obvious on the coloured socks as the letters are in a contrasting colour, not white on white. A good, tight fit due to the elasticity of the materials.

Santini 2025
High socks – Chuck would like them

Santini 2025
Padding and different materials

The overall impression: As I said at the start: I like Santini. Apart from no small zip pocket on the jersey, I can’t fins any problems. Comfortable Italian style, great colours and most importantly, a terrific seat pad. Santini doesn’t waste money on fancy packaging, like many top-end clothing manufacturers. It’s very nice when the kit arrives in a plush presentation box, but you don’t wear the packaging and it ends up in the recycling bin. Santini is a top product, but not at crazy prices. I just can’t wait for the hot weather to get out there for a longer ride. Roll on the summer.

Santini 2025
Nice colours and comfortable

Primal Roadtrip Ride Prisma Jersey – $80

Primal sez:  May is National Bike Month. Whether you bike to work or prefer to go for a weekend ride, or both, Primal has the gear to get you to your destination. Drive less, bike more!

Primal takes license, quite literally, with its Road Trip “Prisma” Jersey. This standard fit jersey is based on licenses and features a travel-inspired design, making it the perfect choice for your next adventure.

PEZ sez:  If you’re in the market for a fun jersey to celebrate National Bike Month, the Primal Roadtrip Ride Prisma Jersey definitely falls into that category. The personalized license plate pattern is colorful and noticeable without being too “loud.”

A few ideas for cycling-themed personalized license plates

As jerseys go, the construction is fairly standard/straightforward:

  • The front is two panels separated by a full-length zipper
  • Two side panels
  • Rear panel with three pockets (but no secure zipper pocket)
  • Raglan sleeves
  • High-ish collar
  • Serge stitching for all the panels
  • Primal’s SpeedPro fabric with square grid texture throughout

Because someone will want to know

Primal bills the Roadtrip Ride Prisma Jersey as:

  • For beginner, casual, recreational riders who prefer a more comfortable fit with a modern cut.
  • A standard fit, designed to provide plenty of room in the ride position.

In other words, it’s not a race jersey.

Two indications that this isn’t a race jersey: (top) high collar and (bottom) hemmed sleeves

The smallest size Primal makes the Roadtrip Ride Prisma Jersey in is small, which is what I got. With it being “standard fit,” on me (5’8″, 130 pounds, ectomorph) it was loose (almost baggy) — which is what I expected since it’s not race fit (if Primal made the Ride Prisma Jersey in XS, it would probably be more form fitting on me). I’m guessing a lot of/most riders would call it “comfortable.” And that’s exactly what it’s supposed to be. That and it’s supposed to be “fun.” Perfect for a coffee ride that’s more about coffee and hanging out with friends than the ride. Or to wear on National Ride a Bike Day (May 4th) or Bike to Work Day (May 16th).

Not every jersey needs to be a race jersey

Kogel Kolossos ST Oversized Derailleur Cage – $342.99

Kogel sez:  Introducing the Kogel Kolossos ST, the perfect balance of performance and value in an oversized derailleur cage. Designed for riders who want the benefits of reduced drivetrain friction and improved chain stability—without the premium price tag—Kolossos ST delivers smooth, efficient shifting in a sleek, refined package. With a CNC-machined aluminum cage for durability, precision-engineered hybrid ceramic bearings, and an optimized design for modern road and gravel bikes, Kolossos ST is built to perform. Whether you’re pushing watts on the road or tackling mixed terrain, this is the upgrade that brings efficiency within reach.

PEZ sez:  The Kogel Kolossos ST is available in black, gold, or raw (silver). PEZ got the raw. I wanted something that would stand out from the main body of my rear derailleur, but not too blingy. Plus, an oversized cage means having to fit a new chain and since I’m a fan of a gold chain, I thought a gold cage and chain might be a little too much.

Consider this a sneak peek as I’ve not had a chance to install the Kogel Kolossos ST just yet. I’ll follow up when I do.

I know the big question that PEZ readers will have is: Why spend $$$ on an oversized rear derailleur cage? The theory behind both oversized derailleur pulleys and an oversized derailleur cage (with even more oversized pulleys) is that they reduce friction. According to Kogel:

  • A larger pulley wheel requires the chain to articulate less reducing unwanted drag on your drivetrain.
  • Larger wheels also have a lower rotational speed at the same chain speed. Slower spinning means less drag in the bearing.

So the simple answer is: watts. But I have no way to measure/validate this so it’s somewhat of a leap of faith. And the watts will be #marginalgains. NOTE: Another oversized rear derailleur cage manufacturer claims 2.4 watts and Kogel is on record (in January 2017): I trust the claims to save at least 2.4 watts to be accurate. But watts are watts and if you’re trying to get every last possible watt, then an oversized rear derailleur cage might be the ‘droids you’re looking for. You’ll just have to decide for yourself if you want to spend the money.

And yes, the Kogel Kolossos ST is not inexpensive. But it’s less expensive than the competition. And even less expensive than Kogel’s own Speed Kolossos oversized derailleur cage for road bikes (for TT/tri bikes there’s Aero Kolossos and for MTB/gravel there’s the Kolossos — read here about the evolution of the Kolossos lineup). The main reason Kogel is able to offer an oversized derailleur cage for less $$$ is because instead of ceramic bearings, the Kolossos ST uses stainless steel bearings. So not the absolute lowest friction, but still less friction than standard pulleys and at less cost that other oversized rear derailleur cages.

The top pulley is 12T and the bottom pulley is 19T (11T is OEM for most rear derailleur pulleys, top and bottom)

And OK … I admit that there’s a bling/look-at-me factor. Because it’s oversized, the Kolossos ST will naturally draw attention to your bike. So style points.

That’s all I have to report for now. I’ll report back again when I have the Kolossos ST installed on my bike (probably the LOOK 795 Blade since it’s technically a “go fast” bike — even if I’m now old and slow — and the Kolossos ST is all about watts).

Kogel doesn’t make any claims about weight, but the Kolossos ST isn’t about saving weight — it’s about saving watts

HERA: A Bicycle is Not Made of Tubes – It is Made of Intentions…

HERA Bike 2025

There is a very widespread – and very superficial – idea in the world of cycling: that a bike used in the “world tour” is the pinnacle of technology. That everything shiny black and lightweight is the pinnacle of performance.

The reality is more complex. And much more interesting.

HERA was born from this complexity. It is not a carbon, metal, or titanium bicycle. It is an adaptive design platform, built around the athlete’s specific characteristics. A bike that does not exist until the cyclist for whom it is intended exists. And only then does it take shape: in a version, a geometry, a unique and unrepeatable combination of materials.

And many begin to exist, coming out of the laboratories of TOOT Engineering and T°RED Bikes led by Romolo Stanco, and they are not just different in finishes, colors, or assemblies, not even in geometries and finishes. Every tube, every connection, every thickness is determined and created for that single bicycle and for its relationship with the athlete who uses it.
.
HERA Bike 2025

The process is called A.D.A.P.T. – Adaptive Design Advanced Process Technologies, and it is the protocol developed by TOOT Engineering to transfer a method already applied in advanced sectors such as the most advanced automotive or America’s Cup sailing to the real world.

No molds, no standards, no semi-finished products, no compromises. Only adaptive digital design, biodynamic simulations (HORAI Gen2), mechanical and aerodynamic integration tests (ADWS), and integrated manufacturing with additive and digital technologies.
Science fiction?

No, it’s the same approach adopted by Czinger or Divergent to build track cars outside every rule or by Dan Bernasconi to develop the boat that won the America’s Cup three times or the processes that allow, thanks to advanced simulators, to design and develop race cars without even testing them: you don’t start from a model to replicate, but from a performance to achieve.

Romolo Stanco with Bianca Advanced Innovations has optimized a complex process for years, one that diverges from both the industrial production line and the artisanal one. Not necessarily better or worse than what is offered by traditional production, but today decidedly capable of expressing opportunities that are difficult to replicate.

The “racing” derivation of TOOT Engineering, the Olympic ambitions and international results of the small entity based in Montichiari, right in front of the velodrome, has generated a trickle-down effect into “production” for enthusiasts that is very close to that of motorsport and far from the tradition of the “cycling” world.

Erica Marson – who for more than ten years has brought this vision into the hundreds of bikes and components with the TOOT and T°RED brands – has transformed the concept of “laboratory”, or company, into a basket of experience, know-how, skills, and experiences that do not belong to the bike world and which allow every challenge to be faced with a radical approach. And the results prove her right: investments in the “track” have allowed for experimentation, testing with the best athletes in the world, athletes who are bound by professional sponsorship agreements on the road but on the track can and want to be part of the radical evolution of performance.

And after the doubts, the perplexities, the judgments came the results, the victories, the choices of the “pros” and the satisfaction of hundreds of enthusiasts. Bikes that are fast, give the feeling of “being more performant”, of feeling better, bikes that don’t break, components that win from the track to gravel. Radical visions often need time, but HERA does not claim to be right, or better; by its very nature, it opens up dialogue, strong in unique content that can be shaped according to the athlete.

Three materials, one intention: to make performance real.
HERA has recently been created in three versions, each of which expresses a different variation of the same vision: to enhance the athlete and their idea of performance on climbs, on long distances, in endurance.

HERA AlScaZir
Designed for those who want a climbing machine with World Tour numbers. The proprietary aluminum-scandium-zirconium alloy, digitally hydroformed, is combined with Scalmalloy components 3D printed in collaboration with APWorks (Airbus) and Compmech (University of Pavia).

HERA 2025

The result is a bike with a stiffness-to-weight ratio that sets the benchmark for any industrial product, a weight below UCI limits, with MotoGP-like reactivity and handling precision (after all, it is precisely with these alloys that the MotoGP frame is made). All this is achieved with the A.D.A.P.T. protocol: nothing of this bike exists before the athlete who can find their completion in it exists. With a weight of only 6.7kg, it is an absolute reference point with an apparently “entry” assembly but with very high-level racing components like the TOOT YL transmission with carbon crank arms from 155 to 175mm.

HERA Acciaio/Niobio
It is the version designed for distances, for those who experience climbing not as a sprint but

as a sequence of decisions, breathing, control. The tubes are in steel-niobium 2641 hydroformed in molds made in AM, the joints printed in 316L with optimization and process from the Computational Mechanics Laboratory of the University of Pavia and the AM Protolab center. The structure is built like a dynamic cage, capable of managing flex, vibrations, and handling precision in an integrated way.

HERA 2025

In this version, HERA adopts a Campagnolo EKAR 1×13 transmission with a 50T chainring and a TOOT 11-42 cassette (designed to make the Campagnolo 1X13 group “road-worthy”: an “atypical” single chainring born for long mixed routes with a race setup). A “real” weight below 7.6kg, frame with iridescent paint, fully integrated cable routing with a 580mm top tube. The wheels? Always a TOOT Engineering project that is bringing spoked wheels back to road bikes by leveraging track racing experience. Pentagram and Hourglass T represent a “custom” solution also in the world of wheels: native hookless channel width customizable integrated with a more or less rigid rim lamination to adapt even to uneven terrain or even gravel. Unobtainable? No, the price of a high-end industrial wheel with the difference that this one is designed and made for each cyclist. Is it better to laminate it with a 3k twill to manage stresses or with a UD to obtain greater stiffness? It’s not a problem.

HERA 2025

HERA Titanio
Here another prejudice is debunked: that titanium is synonymous with comfort and softness, the “comfortable” bike. In reality, when designed with structural criteria and worked with digital technologies, titanium can offer stiffness superior to many industrial standards but with a more manageable and continuous elastic response. Not many can also boast Ti 6/4 tubes not to “increase stiffness” but to optimize the stiffness to weight ratio.

HERA 2025

The result is a frame capable of reacting immediately, without dispersion, while maintaining total ride quality even after hours in the saddle. It is the choice of those who refuse to sacrifice precision on the altar of lightness, of those who simply use rim or disc brakes little on descents, of those who choose to integrate aerodynamic optimization (with the use of ASHAA) with unparalleled performance and comfort.

The material does not define the bicycle. The project does.

The bike industry manages (very well) a process where each product is designed to be manufactured in thousands of identical copies; metal represents the most advanced design alternative.

HERA 2025

Not because it is vintage, not because it is artisanal, but because it allows the mechanical response of the frame to be shaped according to the body, biomechanics, technique, and ambitions of that unique athlete.

Metal, metals, today have characteristics and optimization possibilities that composites simply do not technologically possess. Metals have surpassed the characteristics of industrialization, pushing the boundary where carbon cannot reach by definition.

HERA 2025

In the HERA project, even the geometries do not derive from a simple “biomechanical study”. They are the result of a systemic integration between body and structure: weight, thrust, positioning, traction, materials, vibrations. The equation is not set a priori: X is solved thanks to a co-design process between the athlete, the designer, and simulation data.

Sustainable technology. Real results. Concrete costs.

This approach, today, is no longer an exercise in style for a few.
Thanks to digital additive manufacturing, metal 3D printing, and the intelligent use of advanced materials, it is possible to produce an “A.D.A.P.T.” bicycle with costs comparable to those of a high-end industrial model.
No inventory. No waste. No compromises.
From €7,720 for the complete bike.

HERA 2025

HERA is not a product.
It is a system of possibilities, a design and technical platform that translates individual needs into real, concrete, efficient objects. It doesn’t tell a story of nostalgia.
It tells a future already in motion.
