Best of PEZ: 5 Favourite Videos: In a universe where it seems everybody on a bikepacking adventure can release a high-quality video, we have had some difficulty narrowing down our choices for the “Best of 2024” when it comes to the visual arts.
No. 1 is definitely “Flandrien,” a fan’s tribute to that Promised Land of Cycling which is, of course, Flanders in Belgium. (Although some might argue about other places—see No. 3 below). Not everyone wants to ride over cobbles in the rain but it looks pretty epic when you do it. History, good food, good beer, good times…

Many of us have come to the realization at a certain point in our lives that something to be regretted was that we did not start cycling seriously earlier. So it was wonderfully refreshing to see this professionally-made video about the producer’s 90 year old father still turning the cranks.

No. 3 is an impressively self-produced video about a multi-stage race wherein Jasper Verkuijl, a Dutch airline pilot and serious amateur rider, takes on the pro racer cosplay event that is the Haute Route. This version takes place in Cycling’s Promised Land of the French Alps. Okay, maybe there is more than one Promised Land for us!

Next up was an enjoyable little Hollywood movie that ran in cinemas in May 2024 and starred Matthew Modine. “Hard Miles” is based on the true story of a counsellor in a school for hardcase juveniles who takes his charges on an epic bike trip as a way to build character. Although it did have a brief run in movie theatres, it is available for rent pretty easily. Good family entertainment.
